You saw at least one of these posted for my i♥faces post above and my fbook friends has seem most as well but I thought i’d share with my bloggy friends too!

We finally went and cut Noah’s hair. I miss his little curls and can’t get over what a big boy he looks like but DH is much happier now and Noah’s no longer mistaken for a little girl:)

When I saw the theme for this week’s i♥faces contest, I had the perfect picture and I’d actually only just taken it yesterday – what timing!

Since about 9 months old my husband has been dying to cut Noah’s hair. It was getting really long and it was easy to mistake him for a girl (especially the last few weeks – if he were a girl we could have done pigtails:) ). However, in an effort to keep those adorable curls just a bit longer, I made him wait until Noey turned a year old. Wouldn’t you know, the first weekend after he turned, we were over at the local chain hair cutting place chopping his lovely locks.

The lady was nice and Noah well behaved and I know some day I’ll beg him to cut his hair but in this moment I couldn’t help but be a little sad…my little baby was turning into a little boy right in front of my eyes…

(I’ll post the rest of the series in a different post, I just thought this one was a nice entry for the contest.)

Check out the other entries over at i♥faces!

We took Noah swimming a few weeks ago at the local hotel while visiting with some out of town friends. He loved it so much that he cried when we took him out of the water. From that point on he viewed the bathtub as his own little swimming pool and would flip over, submerse his face and just splash around. I decided to sign him up for swimming lessons over at the local rec center and today was his first class!

It’s not so much a swimming lesson but rather fun activities in the water to get the babies used to it and comfortable. We sing songs, float around and try to get them to use their arms to pull and legs to kick. Noah’s totally an over achiever:) We spent some time in the kiddie pool and it only took him 2 min to dive headfirst into the water (mostly to drink it but he came up smiling). The instructor even used him for the first example:)

You can see him in the video below, the only one standing and then trying to launch himself into the water.

Here were trying to teach them to paddle with their arms and kick with their feet…yea, he only got it part of the time.

I wait for next week! DH is going to take his turn and be in the pool while I take pics and video:)

Noah had on an outfit he got from Melly, Jay and the Bean and it was so adorable that we had to try it on. Coupled with the awesome construction hat that came with a set of Megablocs he got for his birthday and a screwdriver, he makes one adorable construction worker:)

So, a few weeks before Noah’s birthday I did a cake smash session with him. I really wanted to try out my new lights and actually use the backdrop I ordered last year. We had a great time and with a little coxing Noah got into the spirit of things very quickly.

(click any image to make it larger)

Now, getting the buttercream off of him and the plexi glass required more than a little coaxing…

One year ago at this time they were just starting the Pitocin to try to get the contractions moving along….11 and a half hours later Noah graced the world with his presence and my heart doubled in size. Now every time he laughs or smiles it grows again and again….

Happy 1st Birthday Noah, love you little man!!

(his normal monthly post will be later this week when I can get his onesie pictures taken)

Once the last guest left on Saturday afternoon the only folks remaining at the house were our family. This is the first time in a long time we had everyone (minus Cate) in one spot. My brother and parents, my in laws, DH’s sister and her family all around one table enjoying the aftermath of the party and some pizza. The din of multiple conversations was almost deafening but somehow quite at the same time. All of a sudden someone told a joke and the whole room erupted in warm laughter. I was a moment that you just had to sit back and absorb…and be thankful for such a wonderful group of people to celebrate with.

So, while the house is still pretty much a mess and I’m sure we’ll be recovering for at least the next week, the party was a resounding success! A great time was had by all and there were no major disasters. The weather even held up and allowed us to open the sun room up for extra seating (which was key – 30 adults and 9 wee ones was just perfect with the extra square footage of the sun room).

When we started planning this (well, when I started planning this) it was going to be low key, family only, getting a meat and cheese plate and cake from Costco and a that was it. I can now say that when I decided there needed to be a theme is when it all started to spiral out of control. A quick search on Sock Monkey parties and I was hooked. I had so many awesome ideas that just screamed big first birthday party…so…here we are:)

The taco bar was perfect! We cooked everything the night before and used my moms big crock pots to warm it and keep it hot the next day. We had beef filling and a really awesome and quick chicken filling paired with hard shells, soft corn and soft flour tortillas (plus all the fixins for a taco). I also made some black beans and rice and my mom made her home made mac and cheese (which was a HUGE hit with the adults and the kids). For noshing we had veggies and dip, fruit kabobs with dip, an assortment of cheeses (goat and brie) with crackers and broccoli and cauliflower salad.

Desert was a trip…there were cupcakes (chocolate with butter cream, chocolate with cream cheese, and butter golden with banana mousse filling and cream cheese icing) and banana bread. I had apple fritters too but they never got set out…oops!

I think the decorations were what really put us over the top. I love crafting so I spent the last few weeks assembling things like his bunting, the cup cake toppers, the tissue poms, and the cup cake stand. My mom made him two awesome shirts for his birthday – he wore one for start of the party (until he coated it with cake) and then the other for the latter half of the party. Everyone loved them – I love them (thanks mom!)

I do have to say that this party would have never come together without the help of a bunch of people. My mom and dad arrived the day before to help clean and cook. My dad handled getting the sun room ready and hanging decorations, pictures and minding Noah. Mom and I cooked and cooked and cooked! The day-of my in laws arrived at the perfect time – 1 hour out and we were still cleaning up the kitchen and setting out the food. They pitched in getting chairs set up and getting the kitchen set up for the food. As the guests arrived at 11:00am sharp (pretty much everyone arrived at once…so funny!) we were still setting out food and cleaning up stuff so my two girlfriends Michele and Kristen pitched in to allow me to go greet guests and get things settled. Thanks guys – could have never done it without you.

All in all a great great weekend and a great party. It was a ton of fun to plan and though there were some stressful moments, I would do it all over again (and will I suppose for #2’s first birthday some day down the road).

I owe you all a post about the party (which was a raging success btw) but right now I’m too flippin tired to even think straight! We had a blast and really enjoyed ourselves but I’m plumb worn out. I’m off to relax and crash and will do a full post tomorrow – pictures and all!

This time last year I was doing what most fully baked mommas did – jumped at every cramp and twinge and swear to get that hospital bag packed asap! The dr’s appt at 37 weeks finally kicked me into high gear and I started to gather stuff. I browsed the other mommy blogs and the bump trying to figure out exactly what I needed. So, with so many friends that are due soon, I thought I’d share my bag contents and what we used and didn’t use…

We had three bags – mine, hubby’s, and accessories (a laptop bag really)

Hubby’s bag was easy:
– toiletries (glasses, contact solution, tooth brush, razor/shave cream, deodorant)
– fresh boxers
– fresh clothes (just one change since he could go home)
– Snacks
– money (coins and small bills)

Mine:
– toiletries (glasses, contact solution, tooth brush, shampoo)
– yoga pants that I didn’t mind if they got messy (2 pair)
– nursing tanks (3)
– robe that I didn’t mind getting messy (I wore this, mesh undies, and a nursing tank for the first two days)
– fuzzy socks
– going home outfit for Noah
– blanket for Noah (light and heavy – they provide all the blankets you need really)

Accessories:
– Point and Shoot camera (charger and card reader) – this had our video capability built in.
– SLR Camera (extra batteries, 50mm lens, and card reader)
– Laptop (there was wifi in the hospital) and charger
– cell phones and chargers
– important phone numbers
– insurance info

What we brought but didn’t use:
– MP3 player (never really got to a point in labor that I needed/wanted it)
– toiletries for me (the hospital provided them – except the contact solution)
– books to read (we either slept, watched Noah, or surfed the internet)
– stop watch (the nurses and the contax monitors covered all that)

What we didn’t bring but wanted (and had brought to us later):
– Pillows from home. The hospital pillows were flat and it was nice to have something comfortable from home.
– Boppy. I didn’t bring it originally because we had so much already. I figured my mom could bring it back in the morning.
– Another hat for Noah (the stocking hats from the hospital were so flimsy. We sent it home so the dog could smell and my mom brought us a few new ones).
– FOOD!

What we didn’t bring at all:
– Diapers/wipes (the hospital provided all that we needed there…)
– clothes outside of his going home outfit (he was swaddled in a blanket the whole time)
– Undies for me (the hospital provided all the mesh ones I wanted which were exactly what I needed)

Other items (some are optional):
– car seat (duh..:) )
– bags for toting stuff home (the nurses load you up on supplies, anything opened will get tossed so you may as well bring it home. Grab more monster sanitary pads, witch hazel pads, dermoplast, mesh undies, ice packs, chux pads, etc.. you’ll be thankful!)
– birthing ball if you want
– cards/puzzles (there’s quite a bit of waiting, or at least here was for us)

We were in the hospital about the length of time a c-section birth would be (3 days? I can’t remember now..). I stayed in the hospital garb for the first few hours after his birth. As soon as they cleared me to get up and walk (my epidural had worn off), I took a quick shower and changed into a nursing tank, mesh undies, and a robe. The following day I donned yoga pants too.

For Noah, he was swaddled in a diaper 90% of the time. He also had the hospital issued baby shirt. We’d strip him down to nurse for the skin to skin contact so too many clothes was a PIA. Plus, as the jaundice set in, he was fully naked (well, diaper) as he took his first trip to the tanning bed so from there on it was just a diaper and a blanket when he was out of the lights. We did dress him to bring him home but even his first week at home was spent swaddled so he was in a diaper only alot (he got too hot with clothes plus the swaddle).

Anyways…this was my list. We actually did pretty well in planning. There was not a ton that we brought that we didn’t use and what we needed we just had my parents bring when they visited (we were still on restricted visiting hours due to H1N1). I would recommend a small cooler with food for Hubs and for you after the birth. I went for almost 40 hours without anything more than jello, Popsicles, juice and ice. They allowed me the occasional saltine to help stave of some of the hunger (if I was a rebel I would have taken a big bit of the cliff bar that I’d stashed:) )

And for reminiscent sake…here’s me at 38 weeks…this time last year!

Feb 152011

I seem to be doing alot of that lately…catching up. Lots to do, not enough energy or daylight hours to do it in it seems….regardless, we push ahead and do our best:) However, with that thought in mind, todays “catch up” post will be in bullet form:)

– I realize that I really don’t like running…I make myself do it because I know i need the exercise but really I’m sooo bored the whole run. I even try to liven it up by setting up a good playlist and taking the dog but no…still bored. I’m thinking it’s my surroundings…I’d much rather be mountain biking or hiking in California. I think I’m spoiled….

– Had a wonderful weekend in Pittsburgh with the fam! I got to see some old friends and celebrate the impending birth of my friend Mellys baby bean. We had the fam down for some lunch and cake to celebrate Noah’s upcoming birthday (since they can’t make it down here for his actual party). I even got to sing in the choir at church – it was like old times:)

– I had my heart broken on Monday. I found out that a friend of mine from highschool suffered a devastating loss and my heart breaks for her and her husband. I don’t know what to do or say because I know that nothing I try will take away what they’re feeling right now.

– I finally accepted the fact that I’m getting old on Monday too….V-day was rather uneventful…take out dinner, bath/bed for Noah and then DH and I sat down on the couch to watch My Big Fat Greek Wedding….only to fall asleep half way thru (at 10:00pm…hahahahah)

– DH is a planner, I’ve said that in the past. We finally have our “plan” together for baby #2! There are a few things we need to do to the house in preparation for another baby but we’re well on our way to being ready to start TTC soon:)

– Lastly, the training plan has already fallen off the rails. Last week was sooooooooo cold! Running in 12 and 13 degrees just hurts so I didn’t (and my weight showed for it!). Coupled with the fact that I just don’t like running (mentioned above), I’m having a hard time keeping motivated. Plus! The numbers on the scale aren’t budging…good eating and working out and yet they stay exactly where they’ve been for the last 3 months….10lbs higher than I want them. Gah…just keep plugging I suppose…

And because I can’t leave you without a picture of Noah, he’s a sneak peek of his cake smash photo session last week…

So I’m a day late on this but I have a good excuse – the Superbowl was yesterday and my beloved Steelers were playing (too bad they didn’t actually show up until the second half…argh…I dont want to talk about it..)

Anywho…I’m genuinely surprised. Not having been very active since about my 7th month with Noah I was anticipating a really rough first week of running. But, I made all three runs with not a ton of pain (and a pretty good pace for me) plus, they’re already starting to get easier. Dodging the snow and ice makes it slow going at times and the dog is still getting into her groove (as in, running and not stopping every 10 feet to sniff) but all in all it was a good first week.

The plan called for a 30 min run on Tuesday, a 25 min run on Thursday and a 3 mile run on Sunday. Tuesdays run was just under 2.5 miles (mainly because I biffed it early in the run and had to slow down to let my poor sore bum recover). Thursdays run was 2.6 miles in 25 min and my three mile run took a little over 32 min. I’m slightly sore today from yesterdays run and was pretty darn sore earlier in the week from the previous runs but that too is getting better.

I need to do some cross training today – weights or something but the plan says not to do anything that uses my calves? I’m sure there’s a reason there but right now it’s not clear to me. However, I will oblige since I need to do some arm work anyways (although, lifting a 24lb one year old is a good workout most days)

The weight is not dropping off like I’d hoped but it’s still early. I’m continuing my calorie counting and this three day a week running plan should have it gone in no time right??:) I really really really want to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight before we start trying for number 2. That way I’m not working of a compounded problem after that pregnancy (plus I’ll be more cognizant of my eating with number two…gallons of apple juice and Panera’s broccoli and cheese soup will not be my main stay!)

So, week 1 down…only 14 more to go until the race.

ETA: I totally spaced…I actually was kickboxing thru the summer (at least until I got laid off…) that’s why this isn’t sooooo bad…wow…mommy brain at it’s finest:)

Actually, there’s debate in our house on whether we should consider him a walker or not….he’s been taking steps for a while. Ya know, 2-3 between DH and I or between toys. It wasn’t until this last week or so that he really took off on his own, aimed away from us or from any toys. He’d get 10 or 15 steps in and just plop down. His preferred mode of transportation is still crawling but he can walk now with deliberate steps, even stopping to balance without falling.

I’ve seen him take off across his nursery and across the tv room downstairs. Of course, what I’ve caught on video is not all that impressive. Every time he does it I run for the camera only to find that he’s happy crawling around for the next hour. Gah…frustrating.

This is the best I have so far…

Feb 042011

I only have a few min before I totally crash (I’m exhausted!). I thought I’d share this hilarious video from tonight:

I couldn’t help but laugh at him and he was sooo mad! All he wanted was to climb the stairs. You can see though, he got over it quickly.
